Just one week before the grand finale of the summer coastal tourism season, Hurricane Irene showed up as an unwelcome guest. At approximately 7:30 a.m. EST, Irene howled onto shore as a category one hurricane. According to Kenny Griffin, staff tourisms meteorologist for Appnet, a tourism web design and marketing company who owns grandstrandcams.com, Hurricane Irene is currently expected to make landfall along the North Carolina coast on Saturday. Using current technology combined with collaboration of tools provided by the National Weather Service, Griffin has been monitoring and issuing tourism related advisories on Hurricane Irene since Monday.
