The Area - Hilton HeadHilton Head FishingFor centuries, the coastline of Hilton Head has been trolled by shrimp boats and other fishermen fishing for delicious seafood such as fresh clams, oysters, and crabs. Today, Hilton Head Crabbing and Shrimp Boat Excursions Hilton Head SC are incredibly popular among those visiting the island and there are numerous companies that offer trips and other guided experiences for these activities. Here is some information to keep in mind if you plan to go Hilton Head Crabbing on your own or on one of these types of paid excursions. The rules for licenses to harvest oysters and clams are exactly the same as for ocean fishing from a boat or pier. Keep in mind that there are specific designated areas for the harvesting of fresh oysters and special areas that are considered off limits at various points in the season. Oyster beds may close after a heavy rain, and during this time, you do not want to try to harvest oysters illegally. They close the oyster beds during these kinds of periods due to the possibility of contamination; with heavy rains more contaminants could get into the water and food supply and oysters are the first to filter the ocean waters. Hilton Head Shrimping is altogether different. There are numerous companies and charters that offer Shrimp Boat Excursions Hilton Head SC. Shrimp may be taken with a cast net for personal use without a license, but shrimp traps are illegal and not permitted anywhere. Do not consider shrimp baiting unless you have extensive knowledge and experience in doing so. You may, from time to time, hear locals talking about this, however.
The best places to go Hilton Head Crabbing and digging for Hilton Head Clams are near a docks or even on beaches. The brackish water found inland is often good, as well. If you are going Hilton Head Crabbing all alone, you will need a bucket, a piece of string, and a net. You will also need to pick up bait of some kind; many people like to use a chicken neck, preferably a chicken neck that has spoiled a bit and started to smell. (We said Hilton Head Crabbing was a lot of fun, but we never said it wasn't smelly!) Tie the string around your bait and throw it into the water at the location where you intend to go Crabbing in Hilton Head Island. Wait a few minutes and, when you pull the string up, put the net you bought under it in order to catch any crabs that are attached to the neck but might fall. You will probably have at least one crab even after a few minutes. If the crab is larger than 5 inches and does not have a spongy sack on its underbelly (a sure sign that it is pregnant), then you can keep it and put it in a bucket with a little bit of water; you do not need to fully submerge the crab. Be on the lookout for stone crabs, which you may find from time to time. Stone crabs have two large claws that resemble lobster claws and they are huge. You cannot take these crabs; however, some have found that you can take one claw. Their claws are much stronger than the average crab and you should be very careful when handling them as they can crack fingers. If you find a stone crab you are allowed to remove one of the claws and return it back into the water; it will grow another claw. Never remove the claw of a pregnant stone crab and never ever get caught on the beach with the body of a stone crab, even if you found it already dead. Also, it is not wise to ever cook or eat a crab that you found dead.

Hilton Head Crabbing is different from shrimping and harvesting oysters and clams. Hilton Head SC Crabs may be taken by various methods, but crab pots are limited to two without a license. Crabs must be 5 inches across and females must not be pregnant if you intend to keep the crabs and take them home for your own fresh seafood meals. A good way to tell if a crab is acceptable to take or not
is to turn the crab over. If you see a spongy mass on its underside, it is pregnant and must be put back. There are many Fishing Charters Hilton Head SC that offer crabbing trips, as well.
